YOGA CHIKITSA: Yoga Therapy

The Primary Series Of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga Complete Course starting on September 9th, 2017

This complete course on the Primary Series of the Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga system is designed to gain deep understanding of this healing sequence. Every level of practitioner is welcome. It will be divided in 14 sessions (read the topic covered on each class below) on Saturdays from 8:00am to 12:00m starting September 9th until December 9th 2017. If there are any classes you are unable to attend they can be made up in the spring course.

To maintain very personalized instruction the course will be limited to 10 students. Minimum of 4 students signed up will be require for the course to run (full refund will be given if minimum required students are not reached).

Material and Cost

Every class will be supported with guides about the topic covered each Saturday.

Certification of assistance will be provided (Minimum of 13 sessions must be complete to receive the certification).

$1,600 early bird if paid before July 31st.

$1,800 full payment (after July 31st).

The Theory: Yoga Sutras

All the Yoga Sutras will be taught by Sudheera H.M., a Sanskrit teacher from Mysore, India. We will have online video conference calls to complete 12 hours on the Yoga Sutras throughout the duration of the course.

Sudheera M.H. is one the most comprehensive and qualified teachers in Mysore. He speaks great English and is able to communicate these complex traditions and knowledge in a simple way, making a difficult topic accesible to everyone.

The Practice

All the postures of the Primary Series of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga will be covered in detail: benefits, anatomy, modifications, alignment, adjustments and mythology.

Ideally, during the course, students should take at least 2 Mysore classes per week and 2 LED classes per month as well as have 2 self practices per week. Unlimited Mysore and Led classes will be provided through the duration of the course.

The Teachers

The Yoga Sutras classes will be taught by taught by Sudheera M.H.

Sudheera. H.M. completed his primary and secondary education in his birth place, Sringeri where the goddess Sharada dwells. After completing higher secondary education, his mind turned towards the divine and richest language, Sanskrit. So he came to Mysore and joined Maharaja Sanskrit College to study Sanskrit in depth. To learn Sanskrit, he firstj completed the preliminary course SAHITYA. After that he decided to learn Sanskrit grammar and took Sanskrit Vyakarana Shastra Vidwat (a Sanskrit degree course) as a specialization. In this course he learned Paninian grammar works such as Astadhyayi, Mahadhasya, Siddanta Koumudi, and Laghu Sabdendu Shekhara.
After completing the Sanskrit grammar course in Mysore, he went to Tirupati to have professional education in Sanskrit. He completed a bachelor of education and master of education in Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha, Tirupati.
Sharing knowledge is the main aim of education.

STRUCTURE OF THE COURSE

Class 1: Origins of Yoga

INTRODUCTION Welcoming, goals of the course, what to bring to classes.

HISTORY OF YOGA The origins of yoga from the Pre-Classical Yoga to the present Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga system.

  • An overview of the evolution of Yoga
    • Bhagavad-Gita (Pre-Classical Yoga)
    • Yoga Sutras (Classical Yoga)
    • Hatha Yoga (Post-Classical Yoga)
    • Krishnamacharya (Modern Yoga)
  • Ashtanga Yoga The yoga of the 8 limbs with emphasis in Yamas and Niyamas and how to apply them in your yoga practice.
  • Who is who in Yoga: Understanding the lineage and the different styles of yoga.
Class 2: Tristhana

from 8am to 12m (theory session)

TRISTHANA Drishti, Breathing system, and Asanas Three places of attention for three levels of purification: mind, nervous system and body.

The tristhana method is what sets apart Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga from any other system of yoga, turning a physical exercise into an spiritual practice to create self awareness. Steadiness of mind and body is the result.

  • Drishti: How to use the gaze during the practice to calm the mind.
  • Ujjayi breath+ Bandhas: How to use the energy to create a flow practice.
  • Asanas: The importance of purifying the body trhought physical postures.
Classes 3-6: Yoga Sutras (four Saturdays of Yoga Sutras)

Yoga Sutras: The theory that support our physical asana practice.

All the Yoga Sutra classes will be taught by Sudheera H.M., my Sanskrit teacher from Mysore, India. We will have online video conference calls to complete 16 hours on the Yoga Sutras.   • Mantras: Sacred sounds that open and close the Ashtanga Yoga practice.
    • OM and its origins in Indian philosophy.
  • An introduction to the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.

Class 7: Sun Salutations and Standing Postures

ALIGNMENT AND ANATOMY OF THE POSTURES How to build a safe practice.

  • Surya Namaskar: Origins and history of Sun Salutations in the Indian tradition.
  • Modifying Sun Salutations for various levels of experience, different body types and/or injuries.
  • Two different ways to align our postures: The anatomical alignment used in Iyengar Yoga vs. bandhas: Mula bandha, Uddiyana bandha and Jalandhara Bandha used in the Ashtanga Vinyasa system.

Class 11: Back Bending -Alignment and Adjustments
